THE LITHUANIAN OLYMPIC ACADEMY ONLINE SESSION "THE OLYMPIC MOVEMENT AND THE PANDEMIC" (2021)
On the International Student Day, November 17, the Lithuanian Olympic Academy (LOA) held the online session “The Olympic Movement and the Pandemic”, aimed at students and youth. The President of LOA, Klaipeda University professor Dr. Asta Šarkauskienė greeted the participants and presented the International, Lithuanian and European Olympic Academies and their activities. In her presentation “Pandemic Sports: Challenges and Opportunities”, sports psychologist Aistė Žemaitytė spoke about the challenges faced by athletes during the pandemic, how we should come to terms with changes, what actions we need to take when failing to meet the set goals and “the doors close”, and discussed positive and negative aspects of the pandemic. Lithuanian Olympian Eglė Balčiūnaitė and Lithuanian National Olympic Committee event and project manager Ignas Gibas shared their impressions and experience from the 2021 International Olympic Academy (IOA) youth session that was held online.
The session moderator, the LOA referent for Olympic education Ramūnė Motiejūnaitė, spoke to Saulius Ritter, a rower who participated in three Olympic Games and won silver at the Rio Olympic Games. They discussed his career, memories and impressions from his first Olympic Games in London. The interviewee spoke about the feelings and thoughts that arise when standing on the Olympic podium, about the challenges in preparing for the Olympic Games, and what was the situation at the Tokyo Olympics.
Discussions took place in two working groups, moderated by the participants of IOA youth sessions - Eglė Balčiūnaitė (2021), Ignas Gibas (2021), Paulius Martinkėnas (2020), Diana Krečienė (2018) and Ernestas Vaitkevičius (2017). After the presentation of the material prepared by the discussion groups, the moderator R. Motiejūnaitė summarized the session and thanked all the participants.
