On June 25th Lithuanian Olympic Academy together with their social partners Vilnius University of Applied Sciences, organized an online seminar "Educating children through sports and Olympic education" for Early Childhood Education programme students and Primary Education teachers. Over 200 participants joined the seminar online. Moderator for the seminar, LOA program manager for Olympic education Ramūnė Motiejūnaitė defined the relevance of the seminar - kids acquire the basis of many skills in the preschool age, which are improved later in life, therefore teachers must put a lot of effort to educate children in this age.
Vaiva Juškienė - Dean of the Faculty of Pedagogy at Vilnius College gave the introduction speech and was glad that a few higher education institutions joined organizing this seminar for preschool education teachers, which are lacking in these times. In the first presentation "Development of basic skills of children", Vytautas Magnus University professor Dr. Donatas Gražulis talked about new theories in the teachers' competencies in developing children's physical abilities and skills. The most important thing is to give children the opportunity to try as many movements and sports as possible, because the basic skills are formed in childhood.
LOA program manager for Olympic education Ramūnė Motiejūnaitė talked about developing Olympic values in childhood in her presentation "Developing Olympic values in preschool age." The presenter emphasized that Olympic education is not just about sports and physical education. The presentation was divided into theoretical and practical parts, where the audience was introduced to Olympic education, the possibilities of it's integration in preschool education institutions. In the second part, she gave specific examples of how teachers could include Olympic education not only in physical education lessons but also in other activities.
Miglė Motiejūnė, a psychologist and a professor at Vilnius College, presented "Educating a gifted child - what is important besides physical, artistic and intellectual abilities?" She talked that in the case of Olympic education (development of skills and values), it is worth remembering the development of psychological characteristics, which are essential for any achievement, such as self-control, goal achievement, resilience to failure, etc. There was a discussion about what psychological characteristics are important in terms of developing abilities and how to develop them in a group of preschool children.
Lithuanian Sports University professor Dr. Ilona Tilindienė discussed the psychosocial peculiarities of girls and boys, their differences with the listeners, what the teachers should pay attention to when working with children.
Vilnius College Dean of the Faculty of Pedagogy - Vaiva Juškienė and organizers of the seminar thanked the presenters for newsworthy and informative presentations for a large group of listeners. We are glad that future and current teachers are interested in educational innovations, looking for new ways to diversify children's education.
