Youth Camp 2019

Youth Camp 2019

On April 11–14, the Lithuanian Olympic Academy held the youth camp "Olympic Values in Student Life" for the third time. These are active youths interested in sports and Olympic values. The young participants spent four days in step with sports, shared Olympic ideas, became acquainted with the Lukiškės district of Vilnius.
The camp included a detailed presentation and discussion of the history of the Olympic Games and the organisation of contemporary Olympic Games with the ensuing problems (Ramūnė Motiejūnaitė, LOA Council member, doctoral student at the University of Peloponnese). The students learnt about the system of sports governance (prof. Algirdas Raslanas, LOA Vice President), the benefits of volunteering and the importance of Olympic values to the youth (Vilija Gerasimovičienė, LOA member, lecturer at the Vilnius University of Applied Sciences). The program "Youth Can" was presented by social program coordinator Arminas Vareika. Discussions about equal opportunities in sports and women in sports took place. The students found out about the use of active methods in developing Olympic values.
Aušra Kriškoviecienė, coordinator of the Special Olympics Young Athletes program in Lithuania, introduced the camp participants to the Special Olympics and the game of boccia.
The participants of the camp were excited about the opportunity presented by the event coordinators, LOA directorate staff members Enriketa Prunskienė and Ramūnė Motiejūnaitė, to become acquainted with and try out such sports as goalball, rugby, ice hockey, sitting volleyball, baseball, curling, and boxing basics.
The students did not come to camp for a vacation. They dived into the world of sports from day one. After trying boccia and hearing the lecture by prof. A. Raslanas, the young participants watched and played goalball with coaches Valdas Gecevičius and Sandra Šalčiūtė. Members of the Lithuanian team, Paralympic champions introduced the rules of this game. A competition of night orienteering brought about a lot of positive emotions.
The second day of camp was even more active. It was full of experiences, laughter, physical and mental activity. Having started the day with exercise, Nordic walking, the students listened with interest to V. Gerasimovičienė. After the theoretical part they traveled to Vingis Park to play a gentlemen's game - rugby. There the students had the obligatory "third half" with tea and biscuits. Rugby was introduced by Vilnius Rugby Academy coach Vidmantas Valys, who captivated our students with his charisma. The nourished participants tried out skates and hockey sticks. Former Lithuanian national ice hockey team player and current head coach at the ice hockey academy "Hockey Punks" Mindaugas Kieras introduced the intricacies of this sport. Some wound up feeling the "hardness" of the ice as well. The day ended with sitting volleyball together with players from SC Feniksas and their coach Eduardas Strašunskas.
Day three started with baseball. Coach Nomeda Neverauskaitė and her young assistants taught the students how to play softball and baseball. General Secretary of the Lithuanian Curling Association Vygantas Zalieckas and his colleague taught how to "polish" stones, and students enjoyed the winter cold and the game of curling.
The morning exercise of day four was led by "City Boxing" club coach Alexander Baranov. Boxing elements made an impression on the students.
The participants of the camp showed interested in the programs run by the Lithuanian Olympic Academy, the sessions and trainings organised by the International Olympic Academy.
